Bryn Campbell

Bryn Campbell has enjoyed a multi-faceted and widely-travelled life in photography. He began his career working on photography magazines and annuals, then moved on to become picture editor of ‘The Observer’ newspaper and, later, of a number of other national publications including the ‘Telegraph Magazine’.

He has written and edited a great number of books on photography,  the most celebrated being ‘World Photography’ which featured picture portfolios by Bill Brandt, Brassai, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Kertesz, Josef Koudelka, Ian Berry and Elliott Erwitt, among others. He also wrote and presented the six-part BBC TV series ‘Exploring Photography’ and its accompanying book.

As a photographer, he was awarded one of the first two Kodak Bursaries for photography of social importance. His other awards include a 1st Prize in the News category of the British Press Pictures of the Year contest,  an Honorary Associate Lectureship in Photographic Arts from the Polytechnic of Central London, and the Fenton Medal of the Royal Photographic Society.

He was official photographer of the British Headless Valley Expedition in Canada, and also of the Transglobe Expedition, both led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

In contrast to these adventures and his coverage of such news events as the end of the Vietnam War, he spent a year photographing life at a small village school in Sussex. Such personal projects became increasingly important to him as a way of exploring his interests and avoiding the compromises of commercial work.
